Royals back at Kauffman after cancellation of spring training

The team began summer training camp at Kauffman Stadium on Friday to prepare for the shortened season.

On Friday, the Kansas City Royals returned to Kauffman Stadium to begin summer training camp.

The team, which had its traditional spring training cancelled by COVID-19, is working toward a shortened season that will begin July 23 or 24.

It is a double fresh start for the Royals, both because of the return to training after an extended break and because of a new owner group led by John Sherman.

New ownership includes new manager Mike Matheny.

“I just say what a great first day, usually we got to slow walk our way into this thing and we were able to get right after it and watching guys not feeling for their pitches, not feeling for their swings, saw good stuff all the way across the board, so, couldn’t be more encouraged by what I saw today,” Matheny said. “Once again another reinforcement of guys kind of figuring out what are some of my weaknesses that I need to improve on and how can I use the time we have to get better.”

Matheny says the Royals will hold an intersquad scrimmage on Tuesday, July 7.
