Research Medical Center has held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Brookside ER $35 million expansion.

The Brookside ER, an emergency care hospital, will replace the current facility and will provide access to 24/7 emergency care. The current Brookside ER facility, located at 6675 Holmes Rd., will remain open until the new emergency care hospital opens in late 2026.

“This newly designed, larger facility will strengthen our ability to better serve Jackson County, meeting the growing needs of our community with experienced physicians, state-of-the-art technology and capabilities,” Research Medical CEO Kirk McCarty said in a release. “It means faster access to critical care, an optimal experience for patients, and the reassurance that advanced emergency medicine is available right here in our community.”

The new 20,000-square-foot Brookside ER will be staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians and experienced nurses and will feature 22 private emergency care rooms and advanced diagnostic capabilities.

Upon completion, the new Brookside ER will offer services including ultrasound, mammogram, X-ray, CT scan, bone density and laboratory services.

Research Medical Center is part of the HCA Midwest Health system, which has additional expansion plans for its hospital in Lee’s Summit. Lee’s Summit Medical Center has kicked off a $60 million expansion project that adds two new nursing units, 26 additional patient rooms, a fully redesigned emergency department, upgraded support areas, including pharmacy, laboratory, and food and nutrition services.

Construction for the Lee’s Summit Medical Center is expected to be completed in 2027.

“By expanding our capacity, modernizing our facilities, and redesigning our Emergency Department, we are ensuring that every patient, whether they arrive in an emergency or for a planned procedure, receives exceptional care in an environment that supports healing, safety, and comfort,” Lee’s Summit Medical Center CEO Gabe Clements said during a press conference. “This project is about preparing for the future while staying true to our mission of caring for and improving human life.”

HCA Midwest Health has more than 150 locations throughout the Kansas City region, including seven hospitals, outpatient centers, clinics, physician practices, surgery centers, and other facilities and services to meet the healthcare needs of area residents.
