Regional renters receive $30M in federal rent assistance



Kansas City area renters negatively impacted by COVID-19 have received $30 million in federal funding as part of a rent relief package passed by Congress. The City of Kansas City is set to receive $14.8 million for its renters, Jackson County $11.6 million and Clay County $3.6 million.

A wave of financial relief have been delivered to Kansas City area renters thanks to a relief package passed by Congress last month.

Passed legislation has approved the distribution of $25 billion in rental assistance to renters across the U.S. The Kansas City area is being delivered $30 million of that funding, which has been divided between the City of Kansas City, Jackson and Clay counties.

Renters negatively impacted by COVID-19 will benefit from the funding. The City of Kansas City is set to receive $14.8 million for its renters, Jackson County $11.6 million and Clay County $3.6 million, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury.

On Jan. 5, 2021, the U.S. Department of the Treasury launched the $25 billion Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) established by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021.

The ERAP assists households that are unable to pay rent and utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“The Emergency Rental Assistance Program will help to keep American families in their homes during this challenging time,” U.S. Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin said.  “Treasury is implementing this program with unparalleled speed so our state, local, and tribal partners across the country can provide assistance to families in need.”
