The Raymore City Council unanimously approved a $3.73 million settlement Monday that would stop a proposed landfill and acquire land from the developer.

The settlement includes paying developer, KC Recycle & Waste Solutions, $3.73 million to discontinue the project.

The proposed 270-acre landfill is located south of Missouri Highway 150 in South Kansas City, less than a mile from the Creekmoor neighborhood in Raymore.

Additionally, The City of Raymore would pay $440,000 to the developer for the acquisition of a 12-acre parcel. The purchased land would be used for a future connection between Creekmoor with Missouri Highway 150.

“I have seen firsthand the anguish our residents have gone through for more than a year and a half of fighting this battle,” Raymore Mayor Kris Turnbow said in a release before the Monday vote. “There is no price on the long-term health, safety and well-being of our community.”

The settlement also allows for other municipalities bordering Kansas City to approve or reject a landfill within one mile of its border. Missouri law currently only allows cities within a half-mile to take part in the approval or rejection of a proposed landfill.
