Port KC has approved a $362 million development in the Country Club Plaza that would bring 600 apartments to the neighborhood.
During the Port KC Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, commissioners approved two projects for the Kansas City retail destination. The development includes The Madison and Plaza Corporate Center, developed by Block Real Estate Services and Sunflower Development respectively.
Construction for both projects is expected to begin in 2025, according to Port KC.
The Madison project proposes a 279-unit apartment building, dubbed the same name, and will sit in the vacant northwest corner of the intersection of Madison Ave. and 47th Street to the west of the Plaza. The units will consist of one, two, and three-bedroom options. Port KC’s board approved $212 million in bonds for this project.
The Plaza Corporate Center is a rehabilitation project for the building located at 47th and Madison in addition to a new building and rebuilding the parking garage in the neighboring north lot. The complete project would bring 321 units to the neighborhood, also featuring one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Port KC’s board approved $150 million in bonds.
Both projects will receive tax exemptions for 20 years and will produce $32.8 million in new tax revenues.
The developers will also donate $2 million to Kansas City’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund, which could turn those funds into 162 affordable units.
