Panasonic and United Kingdom-based Nexeon entered into an agreement in that Nexeon will supply the De Soto battery plant with a special material used in developing electric vehicles (EV), the companies announced Monday

The special material is Nexeon’s advanced silicon anode material, enabling the battery cell dentistry within EV up to 50 percent.

“The partnership with Panasonic is a testament to the progress we have made with our battery material technology,” CEO of Nexeon Scott Brown said. “Our Silicon Anode material will bring dramatically improved vehicle range and charging speeds for EVs, helping to address drivers’ concerns and accelerate the transition to cleaner forms of mobility.”

According to Panasonic, the company plans to increase the output of silicon, targeting volumetric energy density of 5 percent by 2025 and 25 percent by 2030.

The expended output of the Panasonic factory continues to grow its expectations and when it opens it could have more immediate effects on Kansas residents.

Last week, energy supplier Evergy said it could potentially increase its rates due to the shire energy output the Panasonic factory will have when it begins operations.

Evergy said rates for serving Panasonic must be approved by the Kansas Corporation Commission.

The De Soto plant is still under development and is planned to open in 2025.
