New tenant to fill old KC Water Department building this spring

The 116-year-old River Market building has scored a new tenant, River Bluff Brewing, following $2.7 million in renovations. Aside from holding a lot of history the building holds a favorable spot, located in close proximity to restaurants and the streetcar line.

The recent makeover of a historic River Market building – formerly a city building – has scored a tenant. River Bluff Brewing is set to move in this May and attract more life to the area.

Originally built in 1905, the two-story building was designed as a horse stable, housing 40 stalls and space for 35 buggies and wagons. The building is most known as the former location for the Kansas City Water Department.

The second floor once held the offices of the superintendents of Pipe Lines and the Meter Department, plus blacksmith and wagon repair shops and a large hay storage room.

Using state and federal historic tax credits, new windows were installed along with brick-and-mortar restoration.

In December 2020, the brokers booked a tenant for the 5,534-square-foot restaurant space. River Bluff Brewing decided to expand to the spot with a new location in Kansas City.

The building’s history and location along the Missouri River are just two reasons why River Bluff was attracted to the site. The brewery is set on a May opening date.
