New national hospital ranking recognizes six Kansas City-area facilities

An assessment of almost 3,300 hospitals nationwide for the Lown Institute Hospitals Index shows those who earned high marks in civic leadership by showing a commitment to diversity, inclusion and community health.

An national hospital ranking index released Tuesday by the Lown Institute measured hospitals across the U.S., recognizing six Kansas City-area facilities for their work.

The index scored from three categories, seven sub-components and 42 detailed metrics to provide a unique and holistic ranking of hospital performance, according to the Lown Institute website.

All six Kansas City-area hospitals recognized received a grade of A- or higher and included Belton Regional Medical Center, The University of Kansas Hospital, Providence Medical Center, Saint Luke’s North Hospital, Shawnee Mission Medical Center (now AdventHealth Shawnee Mission) and Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City.

Ranking hospitals earned high marks in civic leadership by showing a commitment to diversity, inclusion and community health according to Lown, and hospitals received high value of care grades based on low use of unnecessary services. Quality of care metrics evaluated patient safety and health outcomes.

Data from the Internal Revenue Service, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Securities and Exchange Commission were used to assist in the ranking of hospitals.
