Kansas City, Mo.-based National Beef Packing Co. announced this week that it will undertake an $8 million expansion of its facility in Liberal, Kan. The news follows an announcement in July that National Beef is undertaking a similar expansion at its Dodge City, Kan., plant.

“Customers increasingly are requesting smaller and lighter boxes,” said Dennis Boyles, vice president and general manager, National Beef. “This capital project will position us to more efficiently deliver the products customers want, when they want them.”

The Liberal plant project includes the addition of a palletizer, crane, sorters and new shipping lanes. The expanded capabilities are scheduled to come online in late spring 2017.

National Beef Packing Co. has operations in Liberal, Dodge City, and Kansas City, Kan.; Hummels Wharf, Pa.; Moultrie, Ga.; and St. Joseph, Mo. National Beef, with approximately 7,800 employees, processes and markets fresh beef, case-ready beef, beef byproducts and “wet-blue” leather for domestic and international markets. In fiscal year 2015, National Beef generated sales of $7.4 billion.
