Mo. recognized for economic development progress

National recognition has been given to Missouri for major corporate investments in the state over the last year. Gov. Mike Parson credits revamped state programs, saying their launch has led to recent business investment of $2.5 billion.

The state of Missouri recently received two awards from leading economic development publications in recognition of major corporate investments.

“Even during these challenging times, we are proud that we have made great strides in growing our economy and creating jobs,” Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said. “These investments are big wins for Missouri that give us confidence in our economic recovery efforts in the St. Louis region and across the state.”

Parson emphasized numerous job expansions and projects during the State of the State Address in Jefferson City. Parson says they highlight the state’s increasingly competitive business climate.

Among the list of projects attracted to the state over the last year have come from Amazon, Chewy, Accenture Federal Services and others.

One of the biggest projects is in southwest Missouri’s Republic, where Amazon will open its first fulfillment center this year. The facility will create more than 500 new full-time jobs, in the fast-growing community. Starting pay for fulfillment center workers will be $15 an hour.

Parson also highlighted the expansions at Boeing in St. Charles and Ford Motor Company in Claycomo.

Noted during the State of the State address was Missouri’s success in jumping from 21st to 11th in the nation among site selectors. Parson said that’s primarily due to the success of workforce development programs.

“Through Missouri One Start for example, nearly 100,000 Missourians have received training through partnerships with over 400 companies,” Parson said, stating that since the newly revamped program was launched, businesses have invested $2.5 billion in Missouri.
