Missouri Placed In Top 5 States For Retirement, New Data Shows

Posted August 7, 2023

The Show-Me State is among the best states for anyone close to retirement and looking to settle down in according to a new data analysis.

In an analysis from Bankrate, Missouri was ranked fourth best for retirees to settle in or move to based on its rankings from affordability to cost of healthcare.

“Fourth-place Missouri shines for affordability, but struggles with its quality of healthcare, crime and natural disasters.”

Bankrate analyzed multiple data points and assigned a weight to each category; affordability (40 percent), overall well-being (25 percent), quality and cost of healthcare (20 percent), weather (10 percent) and crime (5 percent).

The five best states to retire:

  1. Iowa
  2. Delaware
  3. West Virginia
  4. Missouri
  5. Mississippi

Not to worry for any Kansan retirees as the sunflower state trailed not too far from its neighbor. Kansas was ranked eleventh best state.

Bankrate claims most American retirees age in place, meaning relocating for retirement is the outline and not the norm, “from 2015 to 2019, only about 6.2 percent of the population over age 65 had moved in a given year, compared to about 15 percent of younger people. Still, older adults are increasingly relocating to meet their changing needs and preferences.” according to a U.S. Census Bureau report.
