Among 14 health systems across the U.S. rated in terms of operational metrics and financial positions by Fitch Ratings, St. Louis-based Ascension made the top of the list.
Ascension has an “AA+” rating and stable outlook with Fitch and an “Aa2” rating and stable outlook with Moody’s Investors Service.
The health system has a strong financial profile and a significant presence in several key markets, Fitch said, and expects Ascension will continue to produce healthy operating margins.
Fitch’s analysis is based upon Ascension’s consolidated financial statements. Consolidated total operating revenues equaled $25.3 billion in fiscal 2020.
Ascension is one of the largest nonprofit Catholic health care systems in the U.S. As of June 30, 2020, the system operates 150 hospitals, 57 ambulatory surgery centers, and 53 senior living sites.
In addition to their 470 primary care clinics, Ascension and Ascension providers had over 27 million outpatient/clinic encounters, and 694,000 inpatient discharges. Operations include approximately 2,600 total sites of care in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
