Metro school districts revert to remote learning Monday

School districts on both the Missouri and Kansas side of the metro have opted to return to virtual learning Monday as COVID-19 cases climb. Some districts previously offering mixed learning are making the transition to remote for all students for the remainder of 2020.

Several school districts across the metro area made the decision to send students back home for remote learning, starting this week, as COVID-19 cases continue to climb.

Shawnee Mission schools, along with the two other largest districts in Johnson County, Kansas, Olathe and Blue Valley, won’t be returning to classes until 2021. Students are expected to remain in an online-only format through at least the end of the semester.

Depending on coronavirus case numbers in January, students may also start next semester at home. With this decision, all districts in Johnson County have all secondary students in remote learning.

In the DeSoto School District, middle and high school students are also beginning an online formation, and the older students in the Gardner-Edgerton School District have been in remote learning since the start of the school year.

The case positivity rate in Johnson County is at 14.7%, just slightly below what they consider the “red zone” where the health department recommends all students learn from home.

On the Missouri side of the state line, several other school districts are doing the same. Students in middle and high school in the Blue Springs School District transitioned to online learning Monday for at least the duration of this semester. In the Lee’s Summit School District, students in grades 4-12 also returned home, and don’t expect to be back until at least Jan. 26.
