Martinrea International Inc. plans to permanently lay off 144 employees in the Kansas City vicinity, adding to the recent job cuts in the manufacturing sector.

Martinrea Riverside first opened its doors in 2015. The facility, located at 5233 NW 41st St., cited one of its customers “accelerating the end of production of multiple product lines.” as a reason for the layoffs, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act document.

The layoffs will be conducted in two phases with the first round expected to occur on Dec. 6 and the second round to occur on Jan. 17.

The first round will see approximately 69 employees with a certain number of employees expected to be retained until the second phase, which will approximately affect 75 employees.

Martinrea Riverside is a subsidiary of the Ontario-based Martinrea International Inc.

In November, General Motors Co. announced it no longer produces the Chevrolet Cadillac XT4 at its Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas. Instead, the plant would enter a $391 million remodel of its production line of gas-powered vehicles to focus on making the Bolt EV. The plan ultimately would result in nearly 1,700 workers losing their jobs by January 2025.
