Lowest Month For New Jobs, Payrolls Rise 209,000

The total amount for nonfarm payroll jobs added in June was 209,000, resulting in the lowest amount reported in the year, the Labor Department reported Friday.

The previous month of May marked one of the highest hikes in payroll with an increase of 306,000. However, June being the lowest payroll increase could be evidence of the labor market taking a break in the months to come.

Furthermore, the June report also reported the unemployment rate was 3.6 percent. The unemployment rate has ranged from 3.4 percent to 3.7 percent since March, according to the report. Average hourly earnings increased by 0.4 percent and the average workweek also increased to 34.4 hours.

Total Added Jobs By Sector

While the month proved to be one of the lowest in terms of new payroll, growth in various sectors has proved themselves growth is sustainable. A hearty chunk of growth came from the government in addition to healthcare receiving some much-needed workers.

  • Government increased by 60,000
  • Healthcare increased by 41,000
  • Social increased by 24,000
  • Construction increased by 23,000
  • Professional/Business Services increased by 21,000
  • Leisure/Hospitality increased by 21,000

Unfortunately, the loss of jobs has stricken both the retail trade and transportation and warehouse sectors.

  • Retail Trade decreased by 11,000
  • Transportation/Warehouse decreased by 7,000
