Local children’s nonprofit moves, opens new facility

In operation since 1978, The Children’s Place opened a new facility today. The local nonprofit made its first move in over 30 years to a larger center on Rockhill Road and said the new building will allow them to serve 30 percent more children and families.

The Children’s Place will formally open its new building on Monday — a move the nonprofit said will let it serve 30% more children and families.

The nonprofit will celebrate the opening of its new building at 6401 Rockhill Road in Kansas City with the unveiling of a new version of the Rudy Bear sculpture. The Children’s Place said the old sculpture, named after longtime employee Rudy Liggins, had been at its former home at 2 E. 59th St.

The Children’s Place provides a range of services for children with developmental or behavioral health needs. The organization was formed in 1978 to serve children who had experienced abuse, neglect and other trauma.

The nonprofit’s new building formerly housed the Benjamin Banneker Charter Academy of Technology. Renovation of the building was a focus of a $13 million capital campaign.
