The National Treasury Employee Union Chapter 66 president said employees from a division at the Internal Revenue Service’s Kansas City were laid off Wednesday.
An unknown number of probationary employees from the Small Business/Self-Employed division at the Kansas City IRS campus at 30 W. Pershing Road were scheduled for termination, according to a Facebook video from Shannon Ellis, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, Chapter 66.
The NTEU’s Local Chapter 66 represents IRS union workers in the Kansas City district. Employees are given the option to join the union after they are hired.
The video was posted to the union chapter’s Facebook page Wednesday evening. Ellis also said other employees from other divisions were asked to come to work on Thursday and bring all their equipment. Ellis did not clarify whether the members asked to bring their equipment were also scheduled for termination.
These layoffs affect probationary employees, members who have worked for the federal agency for two years or less. Around 1,000 probationary employees work at the Kansas City IRS campus.
The news of these layoffs comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Feb. 11 allowing the Department of Government Efficiency to decrease the federal government’s workforce.
