Northview Village, the largest nursing home in St. Louis, closed overnight leaving workers without paychecks and more than 170 residents shuttled to be relocated.
More than 170 residents at Northview Village were forced to be bused to different facilities on Friday. The shutdown came after workers were conceded they would not receive their next paycheck, causing workers to walk out.
Northview Village has been fined 12 times totaling over $140,000 for federal violations since March 2021, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services spokeswoman Lisa Cox said the agency was notified at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Friday that the nursing home was closing. Emergency medical services then aided in relocating the residents to other surrounding nursing homes, Cox said in a statement Monday.
“The final resident left the facility before 6 a.m. Saturday,” Cox said. “Our team continued working through the weekend following up with the receiving facilities to check in on the residents who had been transferred.”
While it is uncommon for a nursing facility to cease operation so abruptly, Northview Village has said its operating expenses for 2022 totaled more than $16.4 million, whereas its revenue was around $13.3 million, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
