The University of Kansas Medical Center is seeking approval from the Kansas Boards of Regents to demolish a building at its Kansas City, Kansas campus.
KUMC is requesting approval to raze the Olathe Pavilion. Primarily used as an administrative building, the Olathe Pavilion is a 53,971-square-foot building with an underground level and stands three stories tall. KUMC seeks approval to use $2 million in state-appropriated demolition funds.
KUMC has decided to raze the building instead of maintaining it due to outdated and failing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire alarm infrastructure, according to a Kansas Board of Regents agenda. The Olathe pavilion was built in 1957and at the time of its construction building codes did not require installing a fire sprinkler system.
The estimated demolition costs, utility relocations, and exterior entry are $6.9 million, compared to the maintenance cost, which is estimated at around $19.2 million.
The Kansas Board of Regents will meet at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
