For the first time in months, doctors with The University of Kansas Health System report that the total number of COVID-19 patients has dropped below 100. The system remains cautious yet optimistic as the total sits at 91 on Feb. 4, reporting that under half of that count, 34, are active cases.

The total encompasses all active and recovering COVID-19 patients in the health system, and while it continues a promising downward trend, doctors remain cautious.

Tuesday’s media briefing revealed 101 total COVID-19 patients, by Wednesday the number fell slightly to 98.

Wednesday’s decrease was a milestone for the system, the first time KU Health saw a count below 100 in the new year and months preceding.

Of those 98 patients, 41 are reported to have the active virus as of Wednesday. This count is up from 38 the day before, which had been another milestone for the system as doctors reported it had likewise been months since it had seen active cases fall below 40.

As of today, nine patients are in the ICU, the same as yesterday. Six of those ICU patients are on ventilators today, up from five yesterday. 57

Fifty-seven other patients are still hospitalized because of COVID-19 but are out of the acute infection phase, down from 63 yesterday.
