KU Health System Among First to Receive Emergency General Surgery Verification



The American College of Surgeons announced Monday the University of Kansas Health System, among others, received verification for EGS quality.


Five hospitals in the U.S., including the University of Kansas Health System, have been verified under the new American College of Surgeons (ACS) program to ensure quality in emergency general surgeries.

The ACS’s Emergency General Surgery Verification Program — which launched in September 2022 — assists to maintain standards in emergency general surgery for hospitals in the nation.

Emergency general surgery patients differ from trauma patients in that the former is not suffering from a have not sustained injury, however, urgency is still the priority when treating the patient.

The first five EGS-VP verified hospitals are:

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania: Philadelphia, PA
University of Kansas Health System: Kansas City, KS
University of Wisconsin UW Health: Madison, WI
Riverside University Health System Medical Center: Moreno Valley, CA
JPS Health Network: Fort Worth, TX

An estimated 4 million patients undergo emergency general surgery procedures each year, representing about 11% of all surgical procedures and accounting for almost a quarter of overall inpatient costs, according to the ACS.
