The University of Kansas Health System broke ground on its new cancer center, one of the largest funded projects the system has received.
The groundbreaking, held on May 23, featured University of Kansas Cancer Center physicians and researchers alongside state leaders such as U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly to celebrate the new complex.
The new complex will be constructed in phases and will be located on the 39th and Rainbow campus in Kansas City.
In June 2023, the Sunderland Foundation gifted $100 million for the development of the new cancer center, the largest ever received by the University of Kansas and The University of Kansas Health System. In 2022, the cancer center was designated a “Comprehensive” cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the highest level of recognition.
The new complex will support cellular therapy and house a cellular therapeutics Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratory that will expedite CAR T-cell therapy. The University of Kansas Cancer Center is the only center in the region offering all seven FDA-approved CAR T-cell therapies, according to a release.
“All recovery from this dreaded disease starts with the power of hope,” Moran said. “Today we celebrate hope.”
