The Kansas Turnpike Authority announced that all tolls on the 236-mile highway would be cashless next year.

Original plans for the transition to a cashless and ticketless system began in 2020, however, the pandemic caused plans to delay.

KTA is currently installing scanners that, when turned online, will scan a photo of the driver’s license plate. From there, the license plate will be matched with the driver’s information matched to their vehicle registration and a bill will be sent to the driver’s address.

The gantries needed to mount license plate readers are about halfway complete, Rachel Bell, director of business services and customer relations for the Kansas Turnpike Authority said.

KTA has been using a transition plan to minimize the impact electronic toll collection has on full-time employees. A large amount of toll collection staff will be near the age of retirement when the new system goes online and collection staff not retiring will be transitioned to other areas in the organization, according to the KTA.

For those of whom with a KTAG, not much will change. Drivers equip with a KTAG will pay 30 percent less than individuals went a bill.

With the KTA turning to a cashless system, the organization hopes to relieve traffic build-up in the toll plazas along the highway.
