Kansas City Public Schools discusses a phased-in return to classrooms

The Board of Education met Wednesday evening to discuss a post-Labor Day start date that would involve a five-phase process, beginning with online learning.

This week Kansas City officials recommended that schools in the area start the school year after Labor Day this year.

Wednesday evening the Kansas City, Missouri Board of Education met to discuss options for this year’s fall semester.

Kansas City, Missouri Public Schools said Wednesday that it is recommending that classes start on Sept. 8 with online, distance learning for students.

Part of this plan would involve moving to different phases of in-person learning over time, with a goal of 100% in-person learning, the school district said.

According to the school district’s plans so far:

  • Phase I: 100% distance learning
  • Phase II: Bring Pre-K through third grade students back for in-person instruction
  • Phase III: Fourth through eighth graders beginning with hybrid instruction
  • Phase IV would have high-schoolers start the hybrid model and Phase V would be 100% in-person learning
  • Phase V would be 100% in-person learning.

However, the district’s proposed plan has yet to be approved.

If approved, in order for the plan to work, city officials say the city will need to see a consistent decline in COVID-19 cases during a 14-day period in order for the phases to kick in.
