KCMO Budget Holding Up…For Now



Kansas City’s budget situation is currently holding up despite challenges from COVID-19, but council members are preparing for a scenario that could get worse.

So far, there have been no layoffs or furloughs of city employees and a $1.7-billion budget was passed at the end of March, though the city is experiencing a hiring freeze.

The city hasn’t taken any action yet on more moves and is waiting to see what is allocated as a result of the CARES Act, but the council is preparing for a scenario similar to the Great Recession which would involve layoffs and furloughs.
