KCI reports over 60 percent drop in passengers for 2020

Kansas City International Airport experienced a substantial loss in passenger traffic in 2020, reporting a 62 percent drop from the year prior. KCI saw just under 4.5 million travelers over the last year, a sharp decline from roughly 11.8 million in 2019.

Kansas City International Airport was no exemption to the wide span on industries negatively impacted by COVID-19 in 2020.

Though conditions have improved for many, industries such as travel and hospitality continue to face setbacks.

In 2020, passenger traffic at Kansas City International Airport ended the year down nearly 62 percent from 2019.

Over the last year, KCI reported slightly less than 4.5 million passengers, according to a report from the Kansas City Aviation Department. That compares with nearly 11.8 million passengers in 2019 — the third-busiest year in the airport’s history.

The airport closed out December 2020 with just under 343,000 total passengers. That was down 63.7 percent from the same month the previous year.

The worst day, nationally, was April 14, when the TSA reported screening just 87,500 passengers. That was 4 percent of the total for the same day in 2019.

KCI accounted for 42,190 passengers for the entire month of April, down 95.5 percent from the previous year.
