The Kansas City Streetcar will temporarily suspend its services to perform maintenance work before the opening day of its Main Street Extension to UMKC.

The extension that adds stops along the UMKC campus will open on October 24. However, to ensure a smooth opening, the KC Streetcar Authority is planning to suspend services from September 8 – 14 for maintenance, according to a release.

The KC Streetcar unveiled plans for the grand opening of the $352 million streetcar extension to UMKC in July. The extension adds 3.5 miles to the existing downtown streetcar route, connecting Union Station to 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard on the UMKC campus.

Additionally, the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension project is also utilizing this service suspension to complete activities, including pulling and clipping two strings of OCS wires, installing spring tensioners, adjusting existing wire, and placing the overhead guide wire between 2nd Street and 3rd Street, and near the KC Streetcar Vehicle Maintenance Facility.

A dedicated “Streetcar Link” will be implemented during the week of maintenance. During this time, bus service will be deployed along the streetcars’ route. River Market North at 3rd Street & Grand Boulevard and Union Station Northbound at Pershing Road & Main Street will not have designated stops during the Streetcar Link.
