The KC Streetcar Berkley Riverfront extension is being impacted by the effects of higher construction costs, causing the estimated cost to surge by 75 percent.
The original estimated price for the 0.7-mile extension was $34.9 million. Now, that number has reached a total of $61.1 million, or a 75 percent hike, according to the Port Authority of Kansas City.
Starting at the KC Streetcar’s northern terminus at the northern terminus located at Third Street and Grand Boulevard and would stretch to the Berkley Riverfront. The original plans to extend the railway was only a 0.55-mile addition, however, plans were further expanded to reach the new Kansas City Current stadium in development in January 2022.
On Monday, the Port KC board approved to increase its contributions from $8.5 million to $10.7 million to fund the extension.
The project is expected to begin construction in early 2024 and to be completed in 2025.
