The Kansas City Streetcar surpassed a milestone as the final tracks were installed for the Main Street extension project.
After over two and a half years of construction, the KC Streetcar Constructors installed all streetcar tracks on the extension. The project extends 36,785 feet of rail for 3.5 miles from Union Station to UMKC. That stretch includes 16 stops connecting the Downtown starter line to Midtown, Westport, the Art Museum District and the Plaza.
While all the tracks for the extension have been installed, the streetcar will not be open to the public until further safety certification requirements are met.
The new extension is predicted to open to the public in 2025, according to the KC Streetcar Authority.
Other streetcar construction projects will continue in 2025 such as the Midtown KC Streetcar Annex, a maintenance building for streetcar stops, and a mill and overlay of Main Street between Linwood Boulevard and 51 Street.
