The development of the new stadium and the next home of the Buffalo Bills broke ground on Monday, marking yet another milestone for major stadium projects helmed by Kansas City, Missouri based architectural firm Populous.
The official groundbreaking of the stadium took place in Orchard Park, New York where members of the Populous team meet with franchise representatives to begin the construction possess of the “modern, football-first venue,” according to a press release.
The stadium, named Highmark Stadium, is set to open in 2026. The new Bills stadium is expected to seat approximately 63,000 fans and is now projected to have a cost of $1.54 billion.
“This is an exciting time for the Bills and our entire design and construction team,” Populous senior principal Scott Radecic said. “It was our goal at Populous to design one of the most intimate and intimidating venues in the NFL, and this is the next step to bringing an industry-changing design to reality.”
As part of the project’s aim toward the hardcore football fan, the new stadium will include a 360-degree canopy and perforated metal panels allowing a visual glance for fans outside. In addition, the stadium will also feature a colonnade wrapped perimeter as well as an interior focusing on the “intimacy” of the game.
Populous has designed 1,325 in over 30 countries accumulating over $23 billion in construction revenue, according to Populous data.
