Kansas small businesses receive CARES Act boost

Funding for $38.5 million in CARES Act grants has been approved by Kansas’ State Finance Council. A portion of the total will be given to businesses affected by COVID-19; the remainder will be used for the state’s response efforts including vaccine distribution.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced $38.5 million in CARES Act funding for small businesses and to slow the spread of COVID-19 on Friday.

The funding was approved by the State Finance Council.

Of the total, $20 million will be available for to businesses affected by the pandemic.

The other $18.5 million will be used for the state’s response to the virus, which includes vaccine administration and distribution.

“My administration is focused on keeping Kansans healthy and protecting our small businesses, this funding will help us do both,” Kelly said in a news release. “We will distribute these funds quickly and efficiently to hard-hit communities and businesses across the state, which will bolster our efforts to protect Kansans and keep businesses and schools open.”

Small businesses which can apply for some of the $20 million include restaurants, bars, large venues, movie theaters, PPE manufacturing and private colleges.

The other $`18.5 will be used to support for local health departments’ vaccine administration and distribution, PPE for nursing homes and support for safety net clinics.
