Kansas jobless rate shows strong comeback from early spring

A labor market report for the month of August released on Friday reveals a seasonally adjusted jobless rate of 6.9 percent, a decrease from July’s rate and showing that so far, nonfarm jobs have made a recovery of 52 percent since losses in March and April.

The August labor market report released today by the Kansas Department of Labor brings good news for the state, showing that Kansas is looking at an additional 3 percent jobless rate above where it stood at a historic low pre-Covid, a fairly strong comeback from March and April.

Number from the report show the seasonally adjusted jobless rate for August was 6.9, a decrease from 7.2 percent in July.

Compared to the same time last year in August 2019, this year’s 6.9 percent was an increase from 3.1 percent in August 2019.

“Data for August demonstrates continued progress in Kansas with the unemployment rate and job growth moving in the right direction,” Acting Secretary Ryan Wright said in the release.

This is the fourth consecutive month that Kansas has seen the job rate go up, according to the report.

Since April, total nonfarm jobs in the state have increased by 74,000, showing a recovery of 52 percent of the jobs lost in March and April.

According to the report, seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate nonfarm jobs increased by 9,300 from July, while private sector jobs increased by 5,500 and government jobs increased by 3,800.
