More than 9,000 new COVID-19 cases arose in recent weeks across the United States and Kansas is but one state experiencing this wave of summer COVID hospitalizations.
There were 9,056 new cases for the week ending July 29, a 12.5 percent jump from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This recent summer bump in hospitalizations has already affected multiple states including; New Hampshire, Vermont, Kansas, South Dakota, Montana, Maryland, Maine, Georgia, Mississippi and Illinois.
Kansas admissions are up 66.7 percent, or 40 new admissions, from the week prior.
At a glance, the percentage of new hospitalizations in Missouri has only increased by 19 percent, the actual number of confirmed cases reached 119. When examining the data by county, some counties in Missouri neighboring the KS/MO state line are in fact experiencing a significant increase in cases such as Platte, Clay, Jackson and Cass.
While these numbers should raise any cautious eyebrows, it should also be known experts say this COVID bump is unlikely to lead to a significant spike in severe cases, due in part to existing immunity among the public, as reported in an article from Becker’s Hospital Review.
