Kansas City Star building listed

By Madison Parry

The notorious glass structure housing The Kansas City Star is officially up for lease or sale through Kessinger/Hunter & Co. Covering 4.57 acres at 1601 McGee St., the listing offers 344,130 square feet of office and warehouse space.

Since 2006, The Kansas City Star has housed operations at 1601 McGee St. in Kansas City, Mo. With the recent listing of the property on the Kessinger/Hunter & Co. website, the newspaper’s time downtown is drawing nearer to an end.

In November 2020, the long-time newspaper announced plans to vacate and move its printing operations out of its eye-catching glass building to the Des Moines Register in Iowa.

Today’s listing of the property arrives a year after McClatchy, The Kansas City Star’s parent company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2020.

Prior to the filing, Ambassador Hospitality LLC acquired the newspaper’s offices in 2019 for $30.1 million. Last year, Ambassador Hospitality principal Rosana Privitera Biondo said there was potential for the building to be torn down but believes the odds of the building remaining is more likely.

Covering 4.57 acres of land, 344,130 square feet of office and warehouse space are available for lease or sale.

The property brochure found on the Kessinger/Hunter website shows available space includes loading docks and an interior truck court.
