The R.H. Johnson Co., on Monday, submitted an application to implement a community improvement district encompassing the Merriam Town Center.
The Merriam Town Center is located at 8800 Johnson Drive.
The community improvement district (CID) would place an additional 1 percent sales tax on businesses in the district and issue industrial revenue bonds. Additionally, tax dollars from the CID would help pay for upgrades and amenities to the area such as electric vehicle charging stations and the creation of four new retail and restaurant spaces.
Renovation upgrades would see a $3.6 million renovation of Dick’s Sporting Goods, $3 million toward Cinemark and $1 million toward Five Below. A total of $11 million would be available for reimbursement through the CID.
However, the City Council has not yet set a date to vote on the proposal. If the proposal is approved, R.H. Johnson will need to provide $30,000 to cover the City’s costs related to the applications, according to the funding agreement.
