PUBLISHED MARCH 2024
In a time of economic uncertainty, it’s tough to know whose numbers you can trust—especially in the supercharged political environment of a presidential election year. From one side, the message is “all is well,” and there are indicators—inflation’s surge slowing down, equities markets booming—that things are indeed, in pretty good shape.
Then there are signals that things might not be going so well: Soaring consumer debt, declining consumer confidence, housing markets in disarray. And U.S. corporate profits, for the first three quarters of 2023, clocked in at a wimpy annual growth rate of barely 2 percent, after a robust 9.8 increase in 2022 and a ridiculous 22.6 percent surge—likely never to be seen again—in the 2021 bounce-back from COVID.
Take all of that in and you have to ask: Whom to believe?
In times like these, a little more data might help. We have some. You can discern a few things about the regional economy as it now stands by browsing the 2024 Ingram’s 100. Our annual update of the region’s largest private companies and organizations (including non-profit and municipally-owned institutions like hospitals) offers some insight into where things are booming and where they’re not.
One metric that caught our attention this year was the number of companies with lower revenues in 2023 than we saw in last year’s roster. This time around, 26 took a hit; last year, 16. The higher number isn’t quite on the same level as we saw with 2020 revenues—and we all know what happened that year, when the pandemic crushed that Top 100 and 33 saw revenues dip from 2019.
Still, there are signs of growth. You won’t find them in the logistics sector, where companies who made the cut in 2023 either fell out altogether or saw revenues essentially flat. But you will see them in health care, as hospitals again lead the way with revenue growth.
And overall, the combined revenues of the Ingram’s 100 ticked up to about $175.21 billion, besting the $163.13 billion from a year earlier. That difference would have been substantially larger had the region’s No. 1 company, Dairy Farmers of America, not seen a $2.8 billion drop-off while the nation’s dairy sector was reeling.
As it stands, the combined growth rate for the Top 100 was 7.4 percent in 2023, down considerably from the healthy pop of 15.21 percent the year previous—and not far removed from the tame 6.2 percent gain posted by the entire field in the pandemic’s opening frame.
Two enterprises basked in the warmth of triple-digit gains this past cycle. One was Turner Construction’s Kansas City office, which landed a big share of the $4 billion Panasonic EV battery plant project in De Soto. That produced a healthy surge of nearly 315 percent in office billings. The other was Lead Bank, with a strong showing of 127 percent growth to muscle its way onto this list for the first time.
