H&R Block’s Board of Directors has unanimously elected Richard Johnson as its new Chairman.

On April 1 Johnson assumed his new role. Johnson joined the company’s board in 2015 and is a member of the Audit and Compensation Committees. He succeeds Robert Gerard, who held the position since 2011.

“Consistent with our commitment to Board refreshment and succession planning, the time has come for Dick to take over Board leadership as we transition to our next 5-year strategy for growth and transformation,” Gerard said in a release Wednesday. “Dick has been a great partner for the last 10 years and I’m delighted that he will continue to serve all of us at H&R Block as Chairman of the Board.”

Before joining H&R Block, Johnson served in leadership roles such as president, CEO, and Chairman of the Board at Foot Locker. Additionally, he also serves on the Board of Directors for Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. and Graebel Companies, Inc.

“It is a privilege to serve the company that defines a category and helps millions of people each year. I look forward to continued success as we begin the next phase of H&R Block’s transformation.” Johnson said in the release.

The Kansas City-based tax service provider has been shaking up its leadership recently. Last week the company announced its new chief information security officer, Phillip Miller, would assume the role on March 31.
