The second quarter of the year has shown a “significant increase” in hospital and healthcare system transactions bringing the sector back in line with pre-pandemic levels, according to consulting firm Kaufman Hall.
In a report from Kaufman Hall, Q2 had 20 M&A transactions compared to 15 transactions in Q1 2023.
The average size of the smaller party by annual revenue remained elevated, according to the report. However, the higher number of total transactions was “diluted” by three mega-mergers—transactions in which the seller or smaller party has annual revenues exceeding $1 billion—in Q2.
Most notably for the region, one of the mega-mergers was BJC HealthCare and St. Luke’s Health System in May.

The 20 transactions in Q2 2023 represented the highest number of transactions since the beginning of the pandemic in Q1 2020. Furthermore, Q2 2019 announced 19 transactions and Q2 2018 announced 21.
