In efforts to retain and recruit clinicians who provide health care to children and adolescents, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has invested $15 million in a new loan program for healthcare professionals.
In exchange for three years of service working in a health professional shortage area, the new Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program provides up to $100,000 to eligible clinicians providing pediatric medical subspecialty, pediatric surgical specialty, or child and adolescent behavioral health care which may also include substance use prevention and treatment services.
“In order to improve access to care for children and young people in underserved areas, we need to expand the health care workforce,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a press release. “Through the Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program, we will be able to recruit and train new doctors, nurses, counselors, and other health professionals, and improve health outcomes for young people.”
The application deadline for this new program is July 20, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The loan program’s mission is to provide further access to pediatric subspecialty and behavioral care in school-based settings in the U.S.
