General Motors is moving production of the Buick Envision SUV from China to the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas.

GM announced that it would end production of the Buick Envision in China. The Envision, a vehicle model that has been imported to the U.S., will instead be produced in the Fairfax Assembly Plant by 2028, Reuters reported.

The Fairfax plant also began production of the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. The plant underwent a shutdown and a $391 million retooling of its production line to accommodate the Bolt. The project placed 900 workers on indefinite layoff.

Additionally, GM announced the Fairfax plant would also begin the production of the Chevrolet Equinox, a combustion-engine vehicle, by mid-2027. The Equinox was previously manufactured in Mexico.

GM failed to secure an exemption from the Trump administration’s tariffs on imported vehicles for the Envision. Being manufactured in China, and GM’s only Chinese imported vehicle, the Envision faced a 25% tariff since 2018.
