Lee’s Summit has officially broke ground on the nearly $1 billion project that will bring 3.9 million square-foot mixed use development to the area.
City and state officials gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony last week to announce construction work for the $959 million project known as Discovery Park. Lee’s Summit Discovery Park is a 268-acre site located near Interstate 470 across from Saint Luke’s East Hospital.
The site will have 660,500 square feet of retail, hotels and office space. Along with the retail space are 2,791 apartments with more than 1,400 garage spaces. The park will also feature a riverwalk district and a fitness facility named Discovery Athletic Club.
While construction on the phased project began this fall, additional phases are set to begin through 2031.
The project’s first phase focuses on the construction of The Village, an area located west of NE Douglas St. and immediately north of NW Colbern Road. The Village features; 80,000 square feet of commercial, office, retail and restaurant space; 585 apartments and a 4-acre recreational lake.
The first phase form the project is set to be completed in 2026, in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, two additional phases won’t begin construction until 2024 and the final phase won’t begin until 2028.
