For 27 Missouri high schools in the Kansas City metro, fall sports and select activities have been approved to continue following a unanimous vote from the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference (GKCSC).
Despite local health departments that have advised against it, the conference has determined that due to developed guidelines and protocols that have been put it place, allowing the return of fall sports, albeit with some precautions, is the best move forward.
“Our member schools have worked hard to implement health and safety protocols to keep our students, staff, and fans safe during practices and competitions,” Raytown Schools Superintendent and GKCSC directors board President Dr. Alan Markley said.
“From cleaning equipment to precautions associated with safe hydration, to transporting students to and from contests, our schools are considering all factors to safely navigate this important part of our student experience,” Markley said.
Although the return to fall sports and activities has been approved, the board has advised some exemptions such as asking that programs not hold pre-season scrimmages with other schools.
Schools in each division are expected to follow local health department guidelines for players that test positive. Along with increased sanitation measures, masks will be required at all indoor events.
As for activities related to fall sports, such as marching bands, the board has determined it will be up to each school district if bands and other groups are allowed to attend and participate at sporting events.
