Extension deadline at DMV for Kansans

As part of a signed executive order extending portions of the state of emergency for Kansas, Gov. Kelly extends the deadline for Motor Vehicle Registrations and Renewals.

The signing of Executive Order 20-49 on June 30 by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly extended parts of the State of Emergency Executive Order. The State of Emergency, which was set to expire on June 30, but was extended to September 15, according to a news release from the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan.

With this order, the registration deadline for new vehicles acquired in 2020 has been extended until November 14, 2020. Renewal registrations for the months of March through June have also been extended through November 14, 2020, according to the release.

For drivers who have been unable to complete their registration and renewals, the extension provides some relief.

In June, the Treasury office reopened the Annex Office (8200 State Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66112) for Motor Vehicle title work only, the release said. For all Motor Vehicle work not related to titles, the public is still required to continue to use online, drop off, or mail-in options only. The Downtown Office (710 N. 7th Street, Suite 240, Kansas City, KS 66101) is open to the public exclusively for the Real Estate, Personal Property, and Treasury services.

“While the office is open, social distancing still limits the services that can be provided in our facilities,” Richard Mikesic, director of revenue and county treasurer, said.

In order to reduce crowding, Mikesic said residents should consider utilizing other means that don’t involve in-person interaction. “I highly recommend everyone to first use our various online, drop off, or mail-in options for all their Motor Vehicle, Real Estate Tax, and Personal Property Tax payment needs,” he said.
