The Downtown KC Streetcar construction will be temporarily suspended for approximately four weeks to connect its route with the Main Street Extension project.

The temporary service suspension is estimated to begin on September 30 and last around four weeks, according to a KC Streetcar release. In that time, KC Streetcar constructors will work to “tie in” and connect the extension with the downtown route.

KC Streetcar constructors will work 24-hour shifts, including weekend work, to complete the construction.

To maintain public transportation along the streetcar route, a dedicated “Streetcar Link” bus will operate instead.

Traffic impacts include Main Street Southbound between Pershing Road and 20th Street will remain open during construction and Main Street Northbound between Pershing Road and 20th Street will close on September 23 and is expected to reopen once work is complete, according to the release.

When the tie-in is complete, KC Streetcar will begin running streetcars out of service in the area for the proper commissioning and safety certification of the new infrastructure, including the Pershing Crossover and the Union Station Northbound platform.

After testing is complete and streetcar service resumes, all Union Station northbound passengers will need to board at the new Union Station Northbound stop on the east side of Main Street. Southbound passengers will continue to exit at the Union Station Southbound stop. Passengers wishing to travel northbound after arriving southbound at Union Station must cross Main Street to access the new Union Station Northbound stop.
