Dairy Farmers of America, the largest private company by revenue based in the Kansas City area, might get bigger.
The Kansas City, Kan.-based national cooperative is reportedly in talks to buy all of the assets of Dallas-based dairy products producer Dean Foods, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Such a transaction would need regulatory approval, and DFA’s would have to outbid other competitors during the bankruptcy process.
Dean Foods owns and operates more than 50 manufacturing facilities and as many national, regional and local brands, including Land O Lakes, DairyPure, TruMoo, Tuscan and others.
The company’s net sales came in just under $7.8 billion last year but lost $315 million. Dean Foods announced earlier this year that it was exploring strategic alternatives as a company due to decreasing dairy sales and price competition.
