Within the United States cases of COVID-19 hospitalizations have reached a record low, crossing the threshold of less than 9,000.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that hospitalizations were at 8,256 as of May 25. This time last year, hospitalizations for May 2022 reached numbers as high as 20,000.
With the public health emergency of COVID-19 officially lifted, hospitalizations records are some of the few metrics still being recorded until April 2024.
While the data shows a positive step toward fewer cases, variants of the disease are still at large and could prove more prominent in the future. XBB.1.5 strains have fallen, according to the CDC. Meanwhile, the XBB.1.16 variants make up 19 percent of infections and XBB.1.9 follow shortly behind at 17.9 percent.
The CDC recommends wearing masks when your area’s hospitalizations reach a high point.
