The Associated General Contractors of America reported a decrease in construction spending for three months in a row and marking the first year-over-year decrease for the first time since 2019.

An analysis from the ACG shows spending fell for the third month in April, a 0.4 percent decrease from March and a 0.5 percent decrease compared to 12 months prior. That marks the first year-over-year decrease since April 2019.

The total seasonally adjusted annual rate reached $2.15 trillion in April, thats 0.4 percent below the revised March rate and 0.5 percent less than in April 2024. The decline followed decreases of 0.8 percent in March and 0.7 percent in February, according to the analysis.

“A pullback in many types of private nonresidential projects, as well as a sharp drop in homebuilding, contributed to the latest drop in construction spending,” chief economist for the ACG, Ken Simonson, said. “Ever-changing announcements about tariffs on key construction inputs, along with potential retaliatory measures by U.S. trading partners, are making owners hesitant to commit to new projects.”
