Almost two years ago, in March 2019, construction began at Kansas City International Airport with the demolition of old Terminal A to make way for the new single terminal that will open in March 2023.
As construction work nears the halfway point, aviation department leaders say the $1.5 billion remains on time and on budget. For passengers at the airport, they can see the terminal taking its final steel shape.
In the coming weeks and months, the elevated roadway will be connected to the terminal, which Meyer says will be a big moment.
As the steel work is near completion and the 6,000 space garage is taking shape, drywall is going up in other parts of the project, which helps work continue in record-breaking cold temperatures.
While construction continues, there’s also a lot of work being done to determine what will go into the terminal when construction is complete.
The aviation department has put out two calls for artists for public art projects inside, with two more calls coming soon.
Last week, the request for proposals went out for the concessions part of the terminal, which includes shops and restaurants.
