Classes resume Monday for metro’s largest school district

Elementary students within the Olathe School District, the Kansas City metro’s largest, returned to in-person learning today as the district begins its transition from hybrid learning back to full in-school learning.

The Olathe School District saw the return of thousands of students to classrooms Monday, the return restricted to specifically those in elementary school.

Conducting hybrid classwork since the start of school in early September, today around 9,000 elementary students made the transition to full, in-class learning.

Olathe holds the Kansas City metro’s largest school district, the decision to open schools’ doors once again made with the support of the Johnson County Health Department.

“Obviously, the constitution here isn’t just public health,” Johnson County Department of Health and Environment Director Dr. Sanmi Areola said. “We’re also considering the advantages and need for physical learning and social interactions. And all of that contributes to part of the decision-making.”

The school district said that although only students at the elementary level have made the return so far, they plan to evaluate conditions soon to determine if middle and high school students will be able to return to classrooms as well.
