As movie theaters act to regain larger audiences, Cinemark Theatres is requesting approval from the City of Merriam to renovate the nearly 26-year-old theater complex at Merriam Town Center.
Cinemark is requesting Merriam’s approval for the addition of an amusement center and arcade, which would replace nine theaters on the building’s east side. Renovations would include areas for laser tag, an 18-lane bowling alley, an arcade, a ropes course and an event space as well as a restructured lobby that could accommodate a bar and restaurant.
The remaining 10 screens on the west side of the building will remain.
The Merriam Town Center location at 5500 Antioch Drive is one of the last of the Dallas-based Cinemark Theatres in the Kansas City area following the closure of the Cinemark Palace at the Plaza in 2019.
The Kansas City-based TK Architects Inc. is the architect and structural engineer for the project. Additionally, Cinemark will partner with Austin-based Envirodesign M7E Systems Engineering for the project.
The Merriam Planning Commission is scheduled to review the request on Jan. 3.
